This local love is one of our favorites, and is a staple of both the pearl street mall, and Boulder community. The beloved Boulder Bookstore is a true gem in the heart of the city. Founded in 1973 by David Bolduc, this iconic shop has grown from a modest local bookstore to Colorado’s largest independent bookstore, occupying a three story, 20,000 square foot space filled with over 100,000 book titles. From the moment you walk in, you can feel the unique spirit that distinguishes Boulder Bookstore from big box competitors. This isn’t just a place to buy books, it’s a place where literature comes alive, community is cultivated, and ideas are shared. From bestsellers reported to The New York Times to hidden gems curated by knowledgeable staff, Boulder Bookstore offers a thoughtfully selected collection that caters to readers of all genres.

One of the defining features of Boulder Bookstore is its lively event calendar, hosting more than 200 author appearances and community events each year. Nearly every night of the week, the upstairs Ballroom transforms into a gathering place where readers can engage directly with authors, poets, and more. These events range from book signings and readings to in depth discussions with renowned writers. Many famous authors have made appearances over the years, including Stephen King, Elizabeth Gilbert, and Gloria Steinem, drawing crowds of book lovers from Boulder and beyond.
This place makes it easy to connect through reading, with book clubs and literary groups ranging from the “From Our Shelves” fiction club to poetry circles like the Living Poets Society, plus community favorites like the KGNU & Boulder Bookstore Radio Book Club. The store also supports literacy beyond its walls through Education Services, offering educator discounts, help with classroom and school orders, and resources for book fairs and author visits, both in person and online.
There is also the popular used book program, where visitors can buy, sell, and trade gently used books. This not only makes reading more affordable but connects readers with preloved books that other people have enjoyed and are deciding to share with others, a practice that many longtime patrons appreciate.

Their impact reaches beyond its shelves, with community initiatives like a literacy foundation focused on getting books into the hands of readers who need them most, including donations to local schools. Whether you’re a longtime local or visiting Pearl Street for the first time, it’s the kind of place where the love of reading feels contagious. With its rich history, lively events, and deep commitment to literacy, this Boulder staple continues to be a true cornerstone of the beauty that is the Boulder community.
