If you’re near Pearl Street in Boulder, there’s a little wood framed cabin that feels like it could have been transported straight out of a Colorado storybook. Inside, the atmosphere is cozy and inviting, the food is familiar but anything but ordinary, and the entire experience feels unmistakably Boulder. It’s the kind of place that feels special from the moment you walk through the door. It’s cozy, welcoming, slightly whimsical, and completely at home in Boulder.

The cabin itself is a big part of the magic. Dating back to 1920, the building has been a part of Boulder’s culinary landscape for decades and was once home to John’s Restaurant, a longtime local institution. When River and Woods opened in 2016, the goal was to give the historic space a new life while creating a restaurant that felt connected to the community around it. That combination of old and new is still one of the things that makes the restaurant so memorable.

The menu is perhaps the best expression of what makes River and Woods different. Rather than chasing food trends, the kitchen takes recognizable comfort food and gives it a playful, seasonal twist. The restaurant describes its philosophy as having "a dash of whimsy, a pinch of tradition", and that's a pretty perfect description. You might find everything from elote baked oysters and bay scallop ceviche to homemade gnocchi, Rocky Mountain trout, smoked and braised short rib, and a seriously satisfying double smashed cheeseburger. Their cocktail and beverage game is also top notch, with a vast selection of beer, wine, and handcrafrted coktails.

They’ve also seriously gotten into the brunch game. Saturday and Sunday mornings bring a menu filled with creative takes on brunch favorites, from Colorado green chile breakfast burritos and smoked short rib hash to wild salmon gravlax, cinnamon churros, avocado toast, and a decadent brunch burger. Add a cocktail or coffee, settle into the cabin, and you have the makings of a pretty perfect Boulder morning.

The ingredients are just as important as the dishes themselves. They work with Colorado farms, ranches and small producers whenever possible, That local focus gives the menu a sense of place. You're not simply eating comfort food, you're eating a version of it that belongs here.
